Top 5 Plumbing Myths That Just Won't Go Away | Triton Plumbing Service London Ontario Plumber

Whether you rent or own, whether you’re in a house or an apartment, everyone has it, and the issues that often go with it.

I mean, unless you’re Amish – but then again, you probably don’t have internet access to read this article either, so I’m assuming if you’re reading this you also have plumbing.

Anyway, some of the “common knowledge” about how to keep your pipes clear, or what can and can’t go down the drain?

Some of that might not be all so common.

Some of it might just be downright wrong.

So let’s flush some of those myths down the drain, and set things right.

Because at Triton Service, a London Ontario drain cleaning plumber, we’ve seen it all.

1. You Can Flush A Goldfish Down The Toilet

So you’ve found poor Sushi floating upside down in his tank.

Let’s take a moment of silence for Sushi.

Ok, so now what?

You want to give Sushi a “burial at sea”?

Go ahead – just be sure he’s actually dead first.

A dead goldfish won’t be a problem for your pipes.

But if Sushi was just faking it, in an attempt to escape this could cause issues.

If Sushi survives the trip, he could end up finding his way into local freshwater systems, where goldfish are generally not a native species.

And given the space to grow, goldfish can become much larger in the wild than when confined by smaller tanks and bowls.

If this happens goldfish can become a threat to native fish.

So bottom line, go ahead and flush Sushi, but be sure he’s not just trying to plot an escape first.

2. If You Shower In A Thunderstorm, You’ll Get Struck By Lightning

This one goes something like this:

Water conducts electricity.

A thunderstorm releases mass amounts of electricity.

If your home gets hit by lightning while you’re in the shower then your bathroom will become “electrified” and you’ll get struck.

But while lightning can hit anywhere, it’s more likely to strike a taller building, or a nearby body of water than your house.

And even if it does, you’d have to actually be touching the pipe or electrical wiring for it to cause a problem.

So unless you’re showering in the middle of an open field using an outdoor shower, it’s perfectly safe to shower during a thunderstorm.

3. Plungers Can Clear A Clogged Drain, Every Time

What do you do when the plunger isn’t cutting it?

Before you go out to buy a better, bigger plunger, consider that there might be something else causing the clog, something that a plunger might not be able to fix.

If you have trees in the yard it’s possible for roots to get into cracks in the pipe.

It’s also possible that a buildup of oil and grease in your pipes is stopping things from moving along as smoothly as you’d like them to.

If there is a persistent clog, or the drain is moving slower than usual it might be time to call the plumber.

4. Putting Lemons In Your Garbage Disposal Will Make It Smell Fresh

Lemon cleans everything right?

Many house cleaners are “lemon scented”, even hand soap loves to use lemons.

Adding lemons to your garbage disposal may be causing more harm than good though.

The citric acid in lemons can corrode the metal, causing you to need to replace it sooner rather than later.

Instead, use ice in your garbage disposal.

Yes, it’s noisy but it works to help sharpen the blades.

Now how’s that for a “cool” trick?

5. Every Plumber Is The Same

If you are having major repair work done on your home, you will probably shop around.

If you need a new dentist you probably won’t just open the phone book (do people still use those?) to “Dentists” and go with the first one listed.

And when you need a babysitter, you’re probably going to ask for recommendations.

Because not all contractors, dentists or childcare providers are the same.

So why would a plumber be any different?

Ensure that any plumber you hire is licensed.

Ask about what extra trainings and certifications they have taken.

Find out where they took their training.

Because a small mistake by a poorly trained plumber today could turn into an expensive mess tomorrow.
